Reminiscing in later years in the family pub in West Limerick, his son "Young" Roger would remember that when they lived in New York, his father and mother had been friendly with the Grimes family who ran the Irish Echo newspaper with it's strong GAA coverage over many years. Julia Corkery of Sliabh Glas on Mount Brandon, sailed from Queenstown to New York in 1913 just a week apart from the boat that brought her future husband to the city. These ships records are available on Ellis Island.
Another West Kerry native and family family friend was John Kerry O'Donnell who, old timers say, sold three bars to fund the establishment of Gaelic Park at West 240th Street, as the home of the GAA in the New York tri-state area over many decades. This was a family acquaintance renewed in the 1940s and 1950s when Old Roger's sons Mickey and Eddie moved to New York.
